A baby seal has attacked bathers on a popular beach in South Africa. Two swimmers had to be treated for bite marks after being attacked by the animal on Cape Town’s Clifton Beach on Tuesday.
South Africa’s NSRI rescue service then appealed on Wednesday for swimmers and paddlers to keep their distance from seals and generally “avoid marine animals”.
Robbe chases after child
A video of the incident (see below) circulated online shows the baby seal chasing a child in shallow water. The animal tries to bite the child’s legs. Two men who came to the rescue would have caused the young animal to flee. Soon after, the seal attacks again and bites a woman. At the end of the video, a man can be seen throwing the animal into the sea.
The NSRI said similar incidents had been reported at other beaches in recent months. Authorities and marine biologists have therefore launched an investigation.
