A man from Lower Austria plunged into the waves on an island off the coast of Bali to help another tourist. The action was successful – but the Lower Austrian is missing…
Meters-high waves hit the dreamy sandbanks of Diamond Beach on the small island of Nusa Penida off the coast of Bali on Tuesday. The locals know that a swim can quickly turn deadly. Nevertheless, tourists took to the water – one was promptly swept away by the ocean. Other holidaymakers – including the entrepreneur from Lower Austria – saw the accident and wanted to help. Four men fell into the water.
German is also missing
And indeed: the rescue of the helplessly floating holidaymaker has been successful. But the Lower Austrian and a German were swept along by the current and pulled further and further out to sea.
Little hope
The water rescue service was notified and searched for the two men on Wednesday and Thursday. As it stands, the Austrian may have paid for his heroism with his life. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the “Krone” in the missing person case. “The search and rescue operation for the missing person is still ongoing. We are in contact with local authorities through our embassy in Jakarta and the Austrian honorary consulate in Bali,” said spokeswoman Gabriele Juen.
Among connoisseurs, the dream beach is now considered a nightmare beach. On December 27, a Malaysian woman died at the same spot while trying to save tourists from the seawater.
