The government of Mexico has confirmed the deaths of at least 29 people following the arrest of Ovid Guzman, son of drug trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, in Sinaloa. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Friday denied that the United States participated in the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán, and that the arrest is related to Joe Biden’s visit.
At a press conference, Defense Secretary General Luis Cresencio Sandoval González confirmed the death of ten soldiers and 19 others “violators of the law” in reference to the armed men who tried to prevent the recapture from Guzman.
Ovidio Guzmán, who the Mexican government believes is leader of the Los Menores faction, related to the Sinaloa Cartel, was arrested on Thursday in Culiacán, Sinaloa state, in an operation that turned into a city-wide campaign battle. Another 21 people were arrested during the police operation, with no civilian casualties, according to Sandoval González.
Moreover, the Mexican government has warned against this the extradition to the United States by Ovidio Guzmán, it will go slowly, as he also faces criminal charges in Mexico. The United States, which made the extradition request in 2019, charges the drug trafficker with crimes related to the conspiracy to introduce drugs into that country, Rodríguez has set out.
