For some, these are undesirable exceptional situations, for others the hard daily bread on the way to work: traffic jams! Even in the last weekend of the Christmas holidays, holidaymakers returning home are almost traditionally threatened with major traffic jams. Mobility expert Harald Frey explains which factors cause traffic jams, why they sometimes arise on purpose and how you can fight them (including as an individual).
A TomTom study published last year, which evaluated anonymous data from 600 million motorists, showed it very clearly: with an average of 66 hours per year, Viennese spent most of their lives in Austrian traffic jams. Regular commuters during rush hours from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. were even slowed down for 105 hours. The suffering of the (working) townspeople.
