A second person died in the serious pyro accident on New Year’s Eve in Ternitz in Lower Austria. After an 18-year-old died from a prematurely detonated bullet bomb, a boy of the same age has now succumbed to his injuries in a hospital in Graz, according to police.
Several local residents detonated ball bombs in a field in St. Johann am Steinfelde, a cadastral municipality of Ternitz, shortly before 0:30 am on New Year’s Eve. The dead person was probably in the immediate vicinity of the fireworks in the explosion, a colleague was seriously injured and was flown by emergency helicopter to a hospital in Graz. There he lost the battle for survival, it was announced on Saturday.
The investigations are still ongoing
A 17-year-old and a 19-year-old were taken to Wiener Neustadt State Hospital with injuries after the accident. The public prosecutor’s office in Wiener Neustadt has launched an investigation on suspicion of murder by gross negligence and bodily harm by negligence against unknown perpetrators.
Two more cases
In addition to the fatal incident in the Neunkirchen district, there were two other pyro-accidents with drastic consequences in Lower Austria on New Year’s Eve. In Lichtenau (Krems district), a 16-year-old was seriously injured in a fireworks explosion. The health of the youngster who was flown to hospital was described as critical by the police.
In Kollmitzberg, a cadastral district of Ardagger in the Amstetten district, a 19-year-old had several fingers ripped off by a firecracker. In addition, some other people suffered blast trauma from this explosion.
