Hardly anyone embodies the outstanding youth work in the fire service quite like Michael Unterberger. The boy managed to avoid a catastrophe.
Shortly after 5 a.m., the emergency call went to the Haindorf fire brigade in the Amstetten district of The Hague. On the other end of the line was 13-year-old Michael Unterberger. Totally composed, although awakened by his brother shortly before because of the fire at home. But the boy knew exactly what was important: “I gave the address, the number of occupants in the house and the degree of smoke development.” This is exactly what the 13-year-old had learned from his fire brigade in neighboring Pinnersdorf .
Lifesaver with only 13 years
After the call, he and his brother woke up the rest of the family and took them to safety. The fire brigade arrived a short time later and extinguished the fire in the room. “Michael has shown that the fire service provides practical and competent training,” says district fire chief Rudolf Katzengruber.
