The war in Ukraine caused an animal drama in the Black Sea.
Six or more Russian submarines plow through the Black Sea. And the Moscow invaders also gathered a mighty fleet on the surface of the water. In addition, there is increased naval activity on this front.
But above all, it is the radio traffic in the depths of the inland waters that has caused a mass mortality of the gentlest marine mammals, the dolphins and porpoises. Almost daily, the bodies of the victims who died in agony wash up on the Ukrainian coast and on the occupied Crimean peninsula. Cause of the environmental catastrophe: The acoustic disturbance caused by these military sonar activities confuses the animals’ sensitive sense of direction so much that they panic and eventually die.
Helmut Belanyecz, Chairman of the Austrian Board of Trustees for Fisheries and Water Protection, also raises the alarm: “The number of unreported cases is very high because many dolphins simply sink to the bottom and die in the vastness of the sea. A silent but agonizing death that takes place largely unnoticed, away from what is happening on the land at the front.”
