A 22-year-old Bosnian woman and her mother (42) stood trial in Graz on Tuesday for animal abuse, forgery and fraud. They sold supposedly healthy, vaccinated and chipped puppies to bona fide customers. That the animals survived is probably a miracle.
Dehydrated, high fever and pneumonia: the condition of the puppies that a Bosnian woman and her mother sold from the car in Graz was dire. The animals lay in their own feces and vomit.
“Pup in Deadly Condition”
“The stench was unbelievable,” said a witness in court, who at the time thought it was strange that the animals were handed over on the street and who, together with the police, set a trap for the scammers.
“My puppy was in terrible shape,” said another buyer. The Styrian invested many hundreds of euros in the vet so that his dachshund-Pekinese hybrid survived. “He’s doing great now,” he beamed.
‘We didn’t force anyone to buy’
“In my opinion, everyone was healthy,” accused mother judge Florian Farmer said. “We didn’t do it on purpose. You couldn’t see visually that they were sick,” said the daughter (22).
“If you say you have 40 dogs, you should notice when they are doing poorly,” the judge said. “We didn’t force anyone to buy the dogs,” the young Bosnian replied snotty.
“Acted with the best of intentions”
In addition to animal cruelty, the women also had to answer for fraud and forgery. The passports and chips were counterfeit. “We acted with the best of intentions,” the two said.
The verdict for the mother-daughter team: nine months probation. They asked for time to think.
