Chances are slim – look for Lower Austrians before Bali stretched out

Date:

The chance of finding Matthias M. (42) from Lower Austria and a 36-year-old German before Bali is negligible. Yet the rescue teams from Indonesia are not giving up trying to find the two men who ended up in the current during a rescue operation.

The search for the two missing since January 3 continues unabated after weather-related interruptions – and is expanding to the island of Lombok. As reported, Matthias M. jumped into the sea to save a vacationer from the current. The action was successful, but the Lower Austrian and another tourist are missing.

metre-high waves
On the small island of Nusa Penida off the coast of Bali, there were meter-high waves last Tuesday when a tourist entered the water and was swept away by the ocean. Entrepreneur Matthias M. from Lower Austria saw the incident and wanted to help. He and three other men threw themselves into the water. While the helplessly floating holidaymaker could be rescued and two other people came ashore again, Matthias M. and a German were swept away by the current and pulled further and further into the sea.

boats and divers
The water rescue team has been searching for the two men for the past few days – so far without success. “We search with different boats and divers. There are also teams on the lookout from the cliffs,” said Balinese operations coordinator Putu Cakra Negara. However, as time passes, hope of finding the two missing alive fades. The bad weather also plays a role, because it has rained heavily several times.
