Parallels with Trump – Biden is now documenting a case for special investigators

Date:

After the discovery of several secret documents in a private office and in a garage of the sitting US president, a special investigator will now take up the case. This was announced on Thursday by Attorney General Merrick Garland, who stressed that it was in the public interest.

In recent days it has become known that classified information from Biden’s time as deputy sheriff has been discovered in various places. These include private offices in the US capital Washington and the Bidens house in Wilmington in the US state of Delaware. The first tranche had already been discovered in early November – shortly before the important midterm elections. It was not until the media reported on the find that the White House confirmed the incident. In response to the initial find, associates of the US president would have searched for further documents and eventually found what they were looking for in Biden’s home, Biden’s special adviser Richard Sauber said. Incidentally, the special investigator in the documents case is the renowned lawyer Robert Hur.

The 50-year-old Hur previously worked for the Ministry of Justice – including in the field of counter-terrorism and corporate fraud. He later served as a prosecutor in the US state of Maryland. Hur was nominated by then-President Trump. Most recently, he worked as an attorney for a Washington law firm.

The situation is politically extremely sensitive for Biden, because his Republican predecessor Donald Trump caused a scandal with a similar case in the summer. When he left the White House, Trump extensively took government documents to his private Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, including a number of top secret documents. The Federal Police FBI had searched the property in August and seized several classified documents. A special detective is investigating the case that Trump could have committed a criminal offense. The Democrat Biden had judged his predecessor’s behavior as “irresponsible”.

Ammunition for the Republicans
Now he faces similar accusations from Republicans. Even though the Trump and Biden cases seem very similar at first glance, there are important differences. According to Biden’s team, they immediately reported the discoveries to the Justice Department and passed on the documents. Unlike Biden, Trump’s case was preceded by a dispute with the National Archives. It tried unsuccessfully for months to get papers from Trump’s term in office. Trump’s team eventually turned over documents to the National Archives — but by no means all of them, as found during an August federal police search of the FBI’s home.
