Blockade week, day 5 – climate activists paralyze traffic for the Secession

Date:

Also on Friday, the latest generation of climate stickers made itself felt again in the early morning traffic in Vienna. This time, a group dispersed at the intersections near the Secession and at the Naschmarkt.

Several participants sat down in the street with banners (“We’re racing into climate hell”), blocking traffic. A second group approached with musical instruments and created an acoustic vortex. A number of participants held onto the lanes of Getreidemarkt, Friedrichstrasse and Rechte Wienzeile, with consequences for early traffic.

On the Rechtse Wienzeile the cars were parked again up to Kettenbrückengasse, on the former Zweierlinie up to the Volkstheater. The ÖAMTC reported that there were also slow traffic or traffic jams on the alternative routes in the immediate vicinity.

Management was quick. “Immediately after the start of the action, the police began to remove the first protesters from the road,” said spokeswoman Barbara Gass.

“We are the fire alarm of this society,” the action group said in a Twitter message on Friday morning. The government was asked: “Where is your climate plan?”

Campaign week causes traffic jam
The wave of blockades has been going on since Monday. On that day, activists took to the streets in front of several Viennese schools and called for a rethink of climate protection. On Tuesday, the participants caused traffic disruption on the Praterstern and on Wednesday on the Vienna Belt.

On Thursday, several participants halted traffic on Schüttelstraße near the Danube Canal at the Prater. However, the attempt to close the A4 in this way and then stay on the road there was thwarted in advance.
