Climate adhesion balance – 52 arrests, reports – and law change?

Date:

Five days, five blockades, traffic jams in the morning and dozens of agents on duty: For a (working) week, activists of the last generation held daily disruptive actions on major traffic routes in the federal capital. The Ministry of the Interior has now taken stock and has promised a possible amendment to the law.

During the Vienna operations, 52 arrests were made and more than 200 reports were filed. According to the Interior Ministry, 850 police officers were present. “The police officers have been doing consistent work in difficult and sensitive situations over the past few days. I would like to thank all officers involved in the operations for their professionalism and sensitivity in the intervention,” Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) said in a broadcast.

Are the powers of the police sufficient?
An interdisciplinary working group has been set up within the Ministry of the Interior. In particular, the question will be addressed “whether the current police powers are sufficient and whether the existing legal arrangements offer sufficient sanctions”, as was said.

Five days, five blocks
On Monday, the demonstrators held onto the streets in front of schools and on Tuesday they temporarily paralyzed the Viennese Praterstern. The Wiener Gurtel at Westbahnhof was blocked in both directions on Wednesday. Schüttelstrasse was the target of the activists on Thursday and the police managed to prevent a planned blockade of the A4 motorway exit. On the last day of the blockades, the participants held on to the Secession.

However, as the demonstrators have already announced, this blockade week is not coming to an end: a new wave of disruptive actions has been announced for February.
