Open letter to Biden – US citizen detained in Iran – now on hunger strike

Date:

A US citizen detained in Iran for more than seven years has gone on hunger strike for seven days to urge the US government to do more to secure his release. He also wrote an open letter to Joe Biden.

“Only the President of the United States has the power to take us home,” Siamak Namazi wrote in an open letter to US President Joe Biden released Monday at the start of his hunger strike.

Iranian roots
Namazi, who has Iranian roots, was arrested in October 2015 for alleged coup plots.

Father now free again
His father Baquer, a former UNICEF employee, was also arrested while in Iran campaigning for his son’s release. He was released last October on health grounds.

Thousands demonstrate for sanctions against Iran
Meanwhile, thousands of people demonstrated in Strasbourg against executions in Iran and for punishments against the Tehran government. EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola said in parliament on Monday after visiting the demonstration that one must respond decisively to the atrocities in Iran. She recalled that demonstrations have been taking place in Iran for about 120 days. “People on the street are on the right side of history,” she said.
