They accuse Greta Thunberg of agreeing with German police over a “false arrest”

A video broadcast on social networks shows the climate activist and the agents posing for photographers in a relaxed atmosphere

The image of climate activist Greta Thunberg carried by two German police officers on Tuesday in what appeared to be an arrest for taking part in a protest against coal mining in West Germany has sparked fierce controversy and allegations of fabrication. The trigger was a video broadcast on social networks in which the young woman poses for the photographers seconds later with the officers and even exchanges jokes in a relaxed atmosphere.

Thunberg, who demonstrated against the destruction of the village of Lützerath as a result of the expansion of a lignite mine, has sparked deep outrage at the attitude she shows in the video. Countless Twitter users are accusing her of agreeing to a “false arrest”, a fact which appears to be corroborated by sources consulted by the German media who assure that it was an orchestrated act sanctioned by the security forces.

Witnesses quoted by German newspapers claim that 20-year-old Thunberg and the dozens of people who protested with her at the edge of the open-pit pit of the large coal mine of Garzweiler, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, were only moved about 50 meters away for their identification, but in no case was there an arrest, as the activist herself claimed. “Yesterday (Tuesday) I was part of a group peacefully protesting against the expansion of a coal mine in Germany. We were evicted by the police and later detained, but they let us go in the afternoon. Protecting the climate is not a crime,” he said on social networks.

However, the young woman has not commented on the attitude of complicity she shows in the video with the officers after her alleged arrest, especially when she appears to be laughing with them while waiting for a photo. The German police have not made any statements about this either.

“So it turns out Greta Thunberg’s arrest was as bogus as the climate change cult she works for,” tweeted Charlie Kirk, a conservative political activist who founded Turning Point USA. Like him, there were hundreds of internet critics this Wednesday who say they are convinced the performance was staged to get media attention.
