A burning and self-propelled diesel locomotive caused a commotion in the border town of Freilassing on Friday night. The locomotive caught fire in the middle of the night and suddenly started moving on its own.
On the Munich-Freilassing railway line in Upper Bavaria, a diesel locomotive caught fire near Ainring at around 3 a.m. on Friday. Even before the fire brigade could start extinguishing the fire, the unmanned locomotive started to drive down the slight slope and towards Freilassing station. By cleverly placing the points, it was possible to divert the ghost locomotive, which was speeding up, to a track east of the station.
Fire brigade almost excluded from noise protection
There the locomotive hit a buffer stop and was therefore slowed down. The set, which weighed several tons, finally came down 300 meters from the border bridge Salzburgerland to a halt. Due to the high noise barriers on both sides of the track, the fire brigade could initially only reach the scene via a stairway and door. The operation ended around 09:00. As the Bavarian Red Cross reported in a broadcast, the quick action of the emergency services and Deutsche Bahn’s emergency manager prevented people from being seriously endangered or buildings along the track from being damaged. No one was injured during the operation. The cause of the fire in the diesel locomotive and the extent of the damage were initially not clear.
According to ÖBB because of the fire between Salzburgerland– Liefering and Freilassing probably until today, Friday, 1 p.m., no travel possible. The long-distance trains between Wörgl and Salzburgerland be redirected. A rail replacement service was established for the S-Bahn and regional trains. Travelers heading to Munich can use the Deutsche Bahn trains from Freilassing.
