British-American influencer Andrew Tate and three suspected accomplices remain in Romanian custody. A court in Bucharest on Friday ruled that Tate, known for his misogynistic remarks, and his brother Tristan, as well as two suspected Romanian accomplices, must remain in prison at least until February 27, Romania’s Mediafax news agency reported. Those involved can object within 48 hours.
The four suspects were arrested on December 30, 2022. Originally, the detention was limited to January 29. In Romania, a suspect may be held in pre-trial detention for up to 30 days during criminal prosecution, but may be extended by the court at the request of the public prosecutor’s office.
Prosecutors allege that the Tate brothers formed an organized crime group whose purpose was to sexually exploit women. They allegedly forced young women to participate in commercially distributed sex videos. Six victims have now been identified. The Tate brothers deny the allegations.
Special unit expands investigation
Meanwhile, the special unit of the public prosecutor responsible for organized crime, DIICOT, has expanded its investigations. Other properties in the capital Bucharest and the surrounding area were searched. The Tate brothers have been targeted by Romanian detectives since April 2021. Andrew Tate rose to prominence in 2016 when he was kicked off Britain’s Big Brother show after a video of him beating a woman with a belt broke.
Shortly before his arrest in Romania, Tate had a skirmish with climate activist Greta Thunberg via Twitter. Tate had bragged about the number of his cars, writing to Thunberg, “Please give me your email address so I can send you a full list of my car collection and its huge emissions.” The pioneer of the global climate protection movement Fridays for Future responded with, “Yes, please enquire, write me at smalldickenergy@getalife.com.”
