Because she had ‘forgotten’ to pay 4,800 euros for dental treatment in Croatia, the handcuffs of an Austrian (44) recently clicked at Dubrovnik airport.
Hundreds of Austrians go abroad every year in search of the cheapest way to solve their “dental problems”. Whether to Turkey, Hungary, Slovenia or Croatia – where at the beginning of November last year a 44-year-old Austrian woman took a seat in a private clinic in Dubrovnik. And that for three days – the doctor had a lot to do: bone formation and the insertion of six dental implants.
Extensive, not uncomplicated procedures, for which the patient who arrived received a total bill of 4800 euros after work had been completed. Payable one week later, as agreed with the Austrian. But the 44-year-old did not meet her payment obligation on that date.
Arrest warrant issued
While in this country you would probably get several warnings at first, in this case the Croatian authorities showed a particular bite – and issued an arrest warrant on suspicion of fraud.
A few days later, the handcuffs clicked: when the Austrian wanted to board a plane to Vienna at Dubrovnik airport, the alarm bells of the search system went off. She completely forgot about the referral, hence the dental patient’s justification.
