ÖBB-Großkampftag – Kitz: The ski party starts in the trains

Date:

Most fans travel to the Hahnenkamm race by train. To cope with the attack, the ÖBB expanded its train and staff this weekend. The “Krone” visited the Kitzbühel-Hahnenkamm train station and commented: “Enjoy it to the fullest” takes on a whole new meaning during the Hahnenkamm weekend.

It is always the same picture: the barriers at the level crossing close, the policemen in front of them shout: “Stay behind!” The train arrives, a crowd pours onto the Kitzbühel-Hahnenkamm platform. The spectacle repeats every few minutes in both directions for hours. Nevertheless, there are no major traffic jams – ÖBB stewards quickly lead the pack from the platform towards the finish area.

“We have 24 to 30 people working here,” explains Silvia Pfeil, the station manager. Given the good mood among the passengers, she has a big smile on her face: “Everything is going very smoothly, people don’t intrude and are in a good mood.”

There was just enough room for the beer assortment
And how! A group of young men from Thiersee near Kufstein can hardly stop laughing. They don’t know exactly why – at least the atmosphere is good, even though the train journey was tough. “It went to Wörgl, then it was tough. We barely got on the train,” explains one of the five friends. His buddy makes an important addition: “But we still have the most important thing on the train!” To the cheers of his friends, he holds an already opened pallet of canned beer over his head.

Train conductors from different countries on duty
After the start of the race, things calm down at the Kitzbühel-Hahnenkamm train station. “The next rush hour comes in the evening”, however, project manager Markus Moser of ÖBB Personenverkehr knows that it is not over yet. He and his team are well prepared for this: “I’m employing more than 200 extra people this weekend.” In the Hahnenkamm shuttles there are two drivers – each on one side so that the trains can turn directly.

Train conductors and cleaning staff also regularly travel with you. The team is international: “For the first time, we are supported by train conductors from Germany, Switzerland and Italy, simply because we have many international travelers. That is well received,” explains Moser, and a German train conductor confirms: “People are in a great mood. The trains are very full, but the atmosphere is good.” It should also stay that way in the evening – the ÖBB team will do everything they can to make sure.
