Bela Rabelbauer is dead. The merchant from Vorarlberg, who achieved dubious fame as the “man with the suitcase” in the late 1970s and early 1980s, died on Friday at the age of 89 shortly after admission to the Vienna-Hietzing hospital.
Christoph Mierau of the Vienna Health Association confirmed a report on this from the APA on Saturday.
Gained questionable notoriety
Rabelbauer gained fame and the nickname “The Man with the Suitcase” through a party donation of ten million schillings (727,000 euros) to the ÖVP in 1979, which the ÖVP later repaid.
Rabelbauer has been in court several times in connection with financial transactions. In 1998 Rabelbauer wanted to run for president, but did not receive the necessary support in parliament or among voters.
