Influenza infections and flu cases have decreased slightly recently, but illness reports across Austria remained “seasonally at a high level”, health insurer ÖGK announced on Monday based on the figures for the past calendar week (week 3). Tens of thousands have to stay in bed.
Across Austria, 61,820 affected people were on sick leave due to various colds, flu accounted for 2,109 cases and Covid-19 had 9,794 sick leave. “Even now in January, a flu vaccination is still urgently recommended,” emphasized ÖGK chief physician Andreas Krauter. “Especially because a very good protective effect can be assumed this year, as the virus strains of the 2022/23 flu vaccine selected by the World Health Organization (WHO) cover the currently circulating flu viruses very well.”
The figures on absenteeism only include employees who are insured with the ÖGK and recipients of unemployment benefits. In the previous week there were a total of 243,729 reports of disability to the ÖGK.
