President Zelensky has announced the departure of several senior officials for driving up prices on army purchases in the middle of the war with Russia
The government of Ukraine has accepted the resignation of several senior officials after a corruption scandal in the army came to light. Members of the Zelensky executive had been buying supplies for the armed forces at high prices in the midst of the Russian invasion, authorities reported. Those involved include Deputy Defense Minister Viacheslav Shapovalov in charge of logistical support; Deputy President Kirilo Timoshenko and Deputy Prosecutor General Oleksii Simonenko.
Investigations are ongoing, but the departure of the attorney general “will preserve the trust of society and international partners and ensure objectivity,” the defense ministry said.
Tymoshenko was already involved in other scandals related to his position. In October last year, he was accused of misusing exclusive government vehicles. He had used an SUV intended for humanitarian work, supplied to the country by the General Motors group. He was one of the few associates of President Volodimir Zelensky, having worked with him since his election in 2019. He also oversaw reconstruction projects for facilities affected by Russian attacks. Similarly, Simonenko is said to have gone on vacation and left the country when only men of fighting age were allowed to travel for professional purposes.
