“Doomsday Clock” will soon strike midnight

Date:

The “Doomsday Clock” is now at 90 seconds to midnight. This was announced by the Science and Safety Panel of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. The hands thus symbolically approach a global catastrophe. The reason for this is mainly – but not exclusively – the increasing dangers of the war in Ukraine.

In the past three years, the clock has stopped at 100 seconds. That’s changed this year: According to experts at the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the war between Russia and Ukraine is pushing the fabled doomsday clock closer to midnight than ever before in its history. Mainly because of the increased risk of nuclear escalation.

Humanity is so close to self-destruction
The clock, which is a “metaphor for how close humanity is to self-destruction”, was thus set from 100 seconds to midnight to 90 seconds to midnight on Tuesday.

The new era has also been impacted by the ongoing threats of the climate crisis and the breakdown of global norms and institutions necessary to mitigate risks associated with advancing technologies and biological threats such as Covid-19, the experts explained.

“Doomsday Time Reflects Reality”
Rachel Bronson, president and CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists said, “We live in a time of unprecedented danger, and doomsday reflects that reality. 90 seconds to midnight is the shortest time the clock has ever been set, and our experts don’t take that decision lightly.”

The time of the doomsday clock is determined by the Bulletin of the Science and Security Board of the Atomic Scientists with the support of the Bulletin’s Board of Sponsors, including ten Nobel laureates.
