Even days after the massacre in a dance hall in the US state of California with eleven fatalities, there is great terror among politicians and the population. “What the hell is going on here,” California Governor Gavin Newson asked Tuesday (local time) in view of gun violence in the United States. Meanwhile, surveillance camera footage has been released showing a bar owner fighting dramatically with the gunman.
The crime took place Saturday night during a Chinese New Year celebration Monterey Park happened, an eastern suburb of the Pacific metropolis of Los Angeles, where many people of Asian descent live. A 72-year-old gunman opened fire on revelers, ten people died on the spot, another victim succumbed to his serious injuries in hospital. Nine other people suffered injuries, some of them seriously.
“I knew I was going to die”
Brandon Tsay, 26, prevented an even bigger massacre with his courageous intervention. The owner of the dance hall “Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio” not far from the first crime scene described to the media on Monday the moments when the 72-year-old attacker suddenly stormed the club: “I knew I was going to die.” The attacker clearly had not committed a robbery, but wanted to kill people. “His body language, his facial expression, his eyes — he was looking for people,” Tsay told the New York Times.
The 26-year-old, whose grandparents founded the club, lunged at the attacker and grabbed the gun by the barrel. “At the time, it was primal instinct,” Tsay said of the CCTV fight. “Something happened. I don’t know what came over me.”
The perpetrator fled and shot himself
“He hit me in the face and on the back of my head,” Tsay said on ABC. “I tried to use my elbows to separate him from the gun.” He eventually managed to take the gun from the 72-year-old. He pointed the gun at the attacker and yelled, in his own words, “Get the fuck out!”
The attacker, identified by police as Huu Can Tran, actually fled. He later shot himself in a white van as police were about to arrest him.
A few days later the next massacre
Another shooting killed seven people Monday in the rural community of Half Moon Bay, south of the coastal city of San Francisco, also in California. A gunman opened fire at two different locations. The suspected perpetrator, a 67-year-old man, has been arrested, according to the police.
