A Russian hacker group claimed responsibility for an attack on key German websites on Wednesday. The online presence of the German federal government and Hamburg airport, among others, were affected.
According to the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), these were so-called distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. It’s an overload attack: websites are flooded with so many hits that the servers crash.
Attacks usually blocked
“Some websites are currently unavailable,” the agency said. “There is currently no evidence of any direct effects on the affected service and, according to the BSI, are not expected if the usual protective measures are taken.”
DDoS attacks are considered to be technically simple attacks often used by “hacktivists”. Groups target individual websites to highlight certain topics. As a rule, a company’s internal IT systems remain unaffected and no data is withdrawn.
