According to observers and the local Russian embassy, health authorities in North Korea have imposed a multi-day lockdown in the capital Pyongyang due to an increase in respiratory illnesses. A special “anti-epidemic regime” applies from Wednesday to Sunday, according to the Moscow embassy in Pyongyang. This can be extended by three days.
It is still unclear whether the order was made because of a new corona outbreak in the isolated country. Due to the low outside temperatures, there were cases of flu and other respiratory diseases in the city.
No new corona warning so far
Correspondents from the specialized medium NK News in South Korea also reported on Twitter about the five-day lockdown. North Korean authorities have not yet spoken about Covid-19, it said.
According to the Russian representation, foreign embassies should reduce all external contacts. If possible, diplomats should leave the embassy and their homes as little as possible.
Virus declared defeated after three months last year
Long after the outbreak of the corona pandemic, North Korea was one of the few countries that had not reported a single case of infection. In May last year, North Korea officially confirmed corona infections and declared an epidemic emergency. Just three months later, ruler Kim Jong-un declared that his country had defeated the virus. It is still unclear how many corona infections there were in the country.
