Every Austrian spends a formative part of his life at school. It is meant to prepare us for the rest of our lives. But does she really do that? A parent group clearly says: no! “If more people questioned the system, no one would use the school system anymore,” says Barbara Panner. She made a clear cut with several other parents.
Learning under pressure and grades, boxes and little room for development; a parent group from Lower Austria and Burgenland is not really interested in that. They have turned away from regular schools and are homeschooling their children — in some cases for a long time, even before the coronavirus pandemic forced the rest of the country’s parents and students to homeschool.
“I also fell short as a teacher”
“The interest in discovery and the joy of learning has been completely lost at school. “Then we knew we had to cut back,” says mother Manuela Bittgen, who also knows the problem from the other side – as a former AHS teacher.
