A small truck slipped and overturned on the snowy road on the A2 near Pinggau in eastern Styria on Thursday evening. The driver suffered fatal injuries.
At around 8:45 p.m., a 59-year-old from the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district drove a small truck on the A2 from Vienna towards Graz. Due to snowfall, there was snow on both lanes. The 59-year-old overtook a car driving in the first lane, driven by a 45-year-old from the district of Güssing (Burgenland).
Touched the roof despite an emergency stop
The panel van skidded on the snowy road, colliding first with the concrete barrier that served as the center guidance system and then turning against the lowered beginning of the outer guardrail there. As a result of this collision, the van rolled onto the left side of the vehicle and slid across the roadway. The 45-year-old driver hit the roof of the van despite an emergency stop. The van hit the concrete barrier again and came to a stop on the left side of the vehicle, opposite to the intended direction of travel.
The driver then had to be freed from the vehicle by the fire brigade with hydraulic rescue equipment. The Red Cross and the emergency doctor present carried out further rescue measures. The 59-year-old driver was taken to the LKH Oberwart, where he succumbed to his serious injuries. The 45-year-old driver of the car was not injured.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts and there was no evidence of alcohol consumption.
