Rejection by Pistorius: ‘Keep delivery of fighter jets out’

Date:

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has rejected the delivery of fighter jets to Ukraine. On the other hand, in view of the recent decision to deliver Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, he stressed: “This delivery will not make us a war party.”

“I think that is out of the question,” the SPD politician told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” (weekend edition). “Fighters are much more complex systems than battle tanks and have a very different range and firepower. We would be venturing into dimensions that I would warn about at this point.”

Ukraine also demands warplanes for its defense against Russia. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) had rejected such a delivery in the Bundestag on Wednesday. “I made it clear very early on that it’s not about fighter jets and that’s what I’m doing here,” he said.

“With this delivery we will not become a party to the war.”
In view of the recent decision to supply Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, Pistorius stressed: “This delivery does not make us a party to the war.” According to international law, one is on the safe side, “that’s what all the experts tell us”. He added: “But we also know that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin is not particularly interested in international law.” Germany is not an active war party – and will remain so.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova had demanded a statement from the German ambassador in Moscow on Friday about “contradictory” statements from Berlin. On the one hand, Germany declares that it is not a party to the conflict in Ukraine. On the other hand, Secretary of State Annalena Baerbock says that the countries of Europe are at war with Russia (see video above). “Do you understand what you are talking about?” Zakharova wrote on the Telegram news channel.

Baerbock (Greens) called on Tuesday at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg for the cohesion of Western allies with the following words: “We are waging a war against Russia and not against each other.” The Russian state media gratefully accepted this statement. as a key phrase for war propaganda – as proof that Germany and the other EU countries are direct parties to the conflict in Ukraine and are fighting against Russia.
