At least three people were killed and hundreds injured in a magnitude 5.9 earthquake in northwestern Iran on Saturday night. The state news agency IRNA reports this on Sunday evening. Accordingly, numerous buildings in dozens of places have been severely damaged.
At least 440 people were injured, it says. The city of Khoy in the province of West Azerbaijan was particularly hard hit. Local authorities reported twelve aftershocks.
According to the Geoforschungszentrum Potsdam, the earthquake occurred on Saturday evening at around 9:44 p.m. (local time) in the border area with Turkey at a depth of ten kilometers. The Iranian government immediately dispatched Red Crescent rescuers to the affected areas.
70,000 families spent the night outside
For fear of further aftershocks, more than 70,000 families had to spend the night outside despite the freezing cold. Only on Wednesday a week ago, the earth shook in northwestern Iran. At least 120 people were injured.
