Gas consumption could rise again due to falling prices. This must be prevented, says German energy expert Veronika Grimm. Under certain circumstances, the federal government should provide incentives to continue saving gas.
Industry in particular could use more gas again due to the fall in wholesale prices, Grimm told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. “That would be dangerous in the current situation. Maintaining a buffer to respond to a more tense supply situation should be a top priority until next winter.” Grimm is a member of the German Council of Experts.
Still not enough liquefied gas
According to her, the demand for gas from China is currently increasing and it can only be expected from next year that the capacity for importing liquefied gas will be sufficient to alleviate the situation. But even then, prices would “be at a higher level than before the crisis”.
The German Ministry of Economic Affairs has so far spent more than four billion euros to immediately relieve gas and district heating customers. “This dampened the rise in energy prices for consumers,” the company said. Since the start of the application period in mid-November, about 3,590 applications have been made by energy suppliers to have costs reimbursed or paid in advance, according to the ministry. Of these, 3212 have already been completed.
Help for German households
Private households, associations, public institutions and smaller companies in particular should benefit from the support. They do not have to do anything for this, the suppliers take care of the requests. An annual consumption of 1.5 million kilowatt hours of gas was set as the upper limit. The December emergency aid is the first phase of the gas price brake, which is expected to take effect in March and retroactively from January 1.
