The five police officers accused of killing African American youths tyron nichols in Memphis (Tennessee, United States) appears before a judge for the first time on February 17according to court records.

The purpose of the judicial hearing will be to determine whether the officers can be released on bail or whether they should be detained.

The officers who beat Nichols, who are all African American, are arrested and each is confronted seven criminal chargesincluding first degree murder, which is punishable by between 15 and 60 years in prison.

The officers, who were expelled from the force on Jan. 18, reportedly arrested Nichols for a traffic violation. last January 7.

After arresting him, as shown in videos released last Friday, the police officers beat Nichols, kicked him in the head and insulted him.

Nichols, 29, died in hospital three days later.
