Date:

A confidant of Russian President Vladimir Putin is the new head of the TASS news agency. Andrei Kondrashov, 50, is a journalist with state television and was press secretary for Putin’s campaign headquarters in 2018.

He now succeeds Sergei Mikhailov, who has led the agency since 2012. This was announced in a government decision on Wednesday. TASS was founded in 1904 and has retained its Soviet-era name. The initials stand for “Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union.” The press agency serves text and photo services in many languages through a network of domestic and foreign agencies.

cooperation with North Korea
For example, content has been distributed via Reuters Connect since June 2020, but this collaboration was stopped due to growing criticism of the coverage of the war in Ukraine. TASS still works with the Korean Central News Agency, among others, and together they signed an agreement to combat fake news. However, propaganda reporting suggests that almost any report that deviates from the regime’s views will be perceived as “fake news”.

The Kremlin has tightened its control over the Russian media since the beginning of the war. Independent news portals were forced to close and many journalists were labeled “foreign agents”.
