Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that he will do the same if Russian troops destroy all defenders of Mariupol.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that Ukraine will withdraw from peace talks in the event that Russia holds a referendum in Kherson and Russian forces wipe out defenders of the besieged city of Mariupol in the southeast of the country.
“If they destroy our people in Mariupol, if a pseudo-referendum is declared in new pseudo-republics, Ukraine will withdraw from any negotiation process,” the Ukrainian president said.
He added that “this definitively prevents the end of the war through diplomatic channels”, it is “definitely a wrong move on the part of Russia” and “shows that everything that has happened so far, all these sessions of the diplomatic groups, are a fiction and a political theater with very bad actors”.
The Russian occupier plans to hold a referendum on the establishment of a pro-Russian People’s Republic of Kherson, initially planned between May 1 and 10, but the date was later changed and could even be moved to next Wednesday, April 27.
About 40% of Kherson’s residents have already left the city.
