A discussion arose – the school assessment system in South Tyrol should be changed

Date:

The South Tyrolean Education Provincial Councilor Philipp Achammer (SVP) wants to legally introduce a new grade scale in schools. The politician wants to abolish numbers below four. With the very bad grades, the next school year could well be over. In Italy, the advance caused a stir.

Italy has a grading system of ten to zero, with a four being considered “severely unsatisfactory”. Achammer wants to legally introduce a new scale at South Tyrolean level. He thinks that giving bad grades doesn’t make sense pedagogically because it humiliates the students. Regardless of the grading system, the purpose of the assessment should be qualified feedback to the students on their performance. South Tyrolean students should be happy with the idea.

Pupils should not be wrapped in cotton
This has led to a heated debate on the subject of figures across Italy. “What is important is that there is a reputable evaluation criterion that is used by students and teachers to make clear the level of preparation and achievement at a given moment. Incidentally, at the same time we have to be careful that our students are not wrapped in cotton wool. If we don’t get them used to dealing with frustrations, of which there will be many in life, we will harm them,” said Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara (Lega).

Support better students with scholarships
The right-wing government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wants to push for more performance orientation in the Italian school system. Since the new right-wing government took office in October, the Ministry of Education in Italy has been renamed the “Ministry of Schools and Income”. With this, Meloni clearly indicates that performance should count more in the Italian school system in the future. Better students should be supported with scholarships.

“Failures are part of the educational journey, bad grades are part of growth. Bad grades should be seen as a means of improvement, not exclusion. Everything depends on the skills of the teacher, they play an important role,” said the mayor of Naples and former minister of the university, Gaetano Manfredi. The quality of the teacher includes not only the transfer of knowledge, but also the ability to grow the student.
