After the momentous drama in Vienna-Penzing, in which a 60-year-old was shot dead by the Cobra task force on Saturday, the investigation is still ongoing. The man fired dozens of times from his apartment and several times hit the ballistic shield “Ramses”, behind which the elite police officers were hiding.
“Several attempts have been made to persuade the perpetrator to give up and otherwise defuse the situation. In the end, however, the danger to others from the perpetrator was so great that one could no longer wait. That’s why the colleagues had to go into the firing line to stop the man,” analyzes commander Hannes Gulnbrein, according to which the gunman “was out for violence” in the interview with “Krone”.
Lit and psychosis
According to initial findings, the enraged man likely suffered from psychosis and aimed his shotgun out of windows and at officials. With a Glock pistol, he was eventually, according to the jargon, “neutralized.”
Despite quick first aid measures, the shooter died on the spot: “Each mission is analyzed in detail and rightly checked for legality. For the time being, however, it appears to be self-defense, because the man shot at his colleagues,” says Gulnbrein.
Tragic case
In any case, the special unit emphasizes that this form of deployment should be seen as a tragically isolated case. Lethal use of firearms has been very rarely recorded in recent years. Despite everything, the load on the deployed agents is high. After all, psychological support was sought after the tragic incident.
