The largest German gas storage facility in Rehden, Lower Saxony, is at least until Friday after a deflagration. A spokeswoman for operating company Astora said on Wednesday that the market will be informed when there is more clarity.
The incident happened on Tuesday, a spokeswoman said. However, security of supply is not in danger, according to a statement from the company. The cause is being investigated.
According to the Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) website, the storage facility was 90 percent full before the incident. The “Spiegel” had reported about it online. The gas storage facilities play a key role in Germany’s efforts to replace the post-Russian gas supply freeze.
No impact on the environment
The State Office for Mining, Energy and Geology in Hanover announced on Tuesday around 10:30 am that there had been an explosion on a flare in front of the compressor units on the open-air site for reasons that are still unclear. People were not harmed.
Effects on the environment have not been determined. The Bundesnetzagentur sees no consequences for the guaranteed gas supply in Germany as a result of the incident.
