What experts have been warning about in recent days has now happened: the enormous amounts of snow in combination with the strong winds caused an avalanche in Upper Austria on Friday. At the Zwieselalm in Gosau, an intensive search is currently underway for several possible victims.
A group of six skiers were out together when the avalanche broke out in open and unsecured terrain near the Zwieselalm mountain station. One member of this group was buried and recovered by the others. The rescued was seriously injured but alive at the time of rescue. Further details about his condition were not known. “One person was rescued injured,” confirms Christoph Preimesberger, head of the mountain rescue in Upper Austria, in an interview with “Krone”. However, it is currently believed that more people were buried under the snow masses.
How many there are is still unclear. Several helicopters and mountain rescuers from around the area are on duty to rescue people who may have been buried. Avalanche detection dogs are also on their way to the scene of the accident.
As soon as more detailed information is available, we will report on krone.at.
