In the Russian border region of Belgorod near Ukraine, authorities have issued an indefinite terror alert because of the shelling of a factory. “In Borisovka, a civilian industrial building was attacked by the Ukrainian forces at night,” Belgorod governor Vyacheslav Gladkov wrote on his Telegram channel on Saturday. It is therefore obviously necessary to extend the yellow alert level – increased terrorism risk – indefinitely.
Previously, governors in their region could only issue terror warnings for a maximum of 15 days. Earlier this week, Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin issued a decree allowing governors to impose terror alerts indefinitely. With an increased risk of terrorism, the yellow and red alert levels, the freedom rights of the local population are restricted, for example by a curfew or vehicle and personal checks.
Prior to Belgorod, the border regions of Kursk and Bryansk have already imposed such an anti-terrorist regime this week.
The fire was started by shelling from Ukrainian territory
The trigger in the Belgorod region was a major fire at a factory in Borisovka, about 30 kilometers west of the region’s capital. According to the authorities, the fire was started by shelling from Ukrainian territory. Fortunately, there were no fatalities or injuries, Governor Gladkow said. In social networks, it is said that metal structures for the construction of bridges were manufactured at the plant, including for the construction of the bridge from the Russian mainland to the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, annexed by Moscow since 2014.
Since the beginning of the offensive war against Ukraine, Russia has systematically shelled the territory of the neighboring country, but has been complaining for months about the shelling of its own border regions on the other side.
