Carsten Stahl came all the way from Berlin to follow the Teichtmeister trial. He does not believe that he is really “acutely ill”. Since the fallen actor is unlikely to spend a day in prison, he shares the conversation with Katia Wagner: “Austria is a paradise for child rapists”.
The former bodyguard and actor of the German program “Privatetektive im Einsatz” criticized the fact that Florian Teichtmeister, as a well-known first offender, may get away with a suspended sentence.
“Teichtmeister would be back home anyway”
“If he hadn’t gotten sick, he would have been home anyway,” confirms Kronen Zeitung court journalist Anja Richter. The announcement that today’s trial day will be canceled due to an “acute illness” came as a surprise, and the lawyers were also “silent”. Nevertheless: “Sooner or later he will have to face himself,” explains the journalist.
Lawyer: ‘Harder sentences only satisfy revenge’
The well-known criminal lawyer Rudolf Mayer cannot understand the theory that Teichtmeister wants to delay the trial so that the media attention decreases – the interest will remain the same. “The man is devastated and probably mentally unable to express himself,” says the lawyer of perpetrators such as Josef Fritzl or Estibaliz Z. He also finds the call for heavier sentences nonsensical. Mayer is sure: “You can only work preventively, the problem cannot be solved with criminal law. Harsh punishments only satisfy the need for revenge.”
Abuse case in Lech: have the authorities failed?
Roberto D’Atri sees things differently after another pending case for which he is responsible as president of the “Alliance for Child Protection”. The family of the three-year-old boy who was allegedly abused by a ski instructor in Lech am Arlberg turned to him. The boy couldn’t sleep, screamed, was frightened, wet the bed and a “happy, young family” had been ripped out of his daily life. The scandal: “Even ten days after the report, the man was still working as a teacher at the ski school!”
Social counselor warns against prejudice
Social worker Theresia Ruß does not necessarily see the demand for stricter sentences as a panacea in the fight against child pornography, but rather invests in prevention. If the punishments are high, a child may not report what it has experienced out of fear. In addition, statements by children must also be checked conscientiously, because: “Often something that children say and is exaggerated by adults turns out to be innocent. Then you are condemning innocent people!” says Theresia Russ.
‘No understanding for the perpetrators’
Stahl is annoyed that the interests of the perpetrators are also being weighed: “I have no patience with someone who steals a child’s soul”. The child activist is calling for minimum, rather than maximum, sentences for consuming child pornographic content and life imprisonment for those who abuse a child. “There is still a lot to do in Austria”, Stahl sums up.
