Rockfall in Steyr – decision on saving the dead on Thursday

Date:

A decision must be made on Thursday afternoon when the two Carinthian excavator drivers who died the day before in a rock fall in Steyr can be recovered. Geologist Günter Moser will first assess the accident site and fly over it again around noon. In principle, he assessed the “dangerous situation as still very high”. Loose parts can fall down at any time.

The city said the affected area in the Unterhimmel district should remain “closed in a large area” for an extended period of time. Four houses and ten people have been affected by the evacuation, the residents are staying with family or friends. The buried road will also not be open to traffic for a long time.

Accident during security work
During work on a cliff Wednesday morning, a 3,000 cubic meter boulder came loose and thundered down. All help came too late for the 31 and 64-year-old excavator operators, they were buried. A rescue used to be too risky for the rescuers. Moser wants to conduct a risk assessment on Thursday. The accident is particularly tragic because it happened during security work.

Buzz effect applied Rockfall
The measures for controlling torrents and avalanches in the country have been in place for some time Upper Austria the conglomerate wall under observation. Above the accident site, the boulder that should have been removed had come loose. A company from Carinthia, which according to Moser is “very experienced with such special tasks”, was awarded the contract. Presumably the weather of the past few days – extremely cold nights and slight plus degrees during the day – has led to “frost heaviness”. In addition, the rock lay “along an old fault point”. The geologist spoke of “a cumulative effect” that caused the rock fall.
