To get the shortage of doctors in Burgenland under control, the state is compiling a “doctor package”. Central point is a new salary scheme.
In Burgenland, the annual gross salary of medical specialists will be the highest in Austria in the future. At the start of your career you can count on 140,000 euros gross per year, after ten years of service 160,000 euros and after another ten years 180,000 euros. Until just before the end of their careers, the doctors earn an annual income of 200,000 euros.
Applies to all hospitals in the country
This has been agreed by provincial governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) with the BURGEF health fund and the supporting organization KRAGES and the Hospital of the Brothers of Charity in Eisenstadt. The model will apply in all five hospitals in the country. It also includes a range of bonuses, for example for further training, and the possibility to provide additional services in departments such as acute operations. The package also includes a solution for weekend shifts.
“That means a financial effort for the country,” said Doskozil. The package would invest between 10 and 15 million euros extra in healthcare annually. Money well invested for the country manager: “We are taking a step that will give us a number one position in Austria.”
KRAGES Medical Director Stephan Kriwanek also considers the package a “very important step”: “It will help us improve the situation.” The deputy medical director of the Hospital of the Brothers of Mercy in Eisenstadt, Andreas Püspök, is also satisfied: “These are good basic conditions for young colleagues to start their medical career in Burgenland.”
“First impression positive”
The Burgenland Medical Association applauds the “attractiveness of the Burgenland location”. However, the package is not yet available with all details, so a final assessment is not yet possible. “But the first impression is certainly positive,” says President Christian Toth.
