The skeleton of a Gorgosaurus has been auctioned in New York for about six million dollars by auction house Sotheby’s. It raised $6.1 million on Thursday, becoming the first such dinosaur skeleton ever to be auctioned.
The Gorgosaurus, believed to have lived more than 70 million years ago, scientists say was related to and resembled the Tyrannosaurus rex, but was significantly smaller.
Most Gorgosaurus fossils have been found in Canada. All the remains discovered so far are in public collections.
A skeleton of the dinosaur species Deinonychus antirrhopus was auctioned in New York in May for about $12 million. In 2020, a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton raised more than $30 million.
Many experts are critical of the auction of scientifically valuable skeletons.
Who bought the skeleton, which was about three meters high and almost seven meters long, which was discovered in the US state of Montana in 2018, has not been disclosed.
