A former British MP has reported his cocaine use as an expense allowance. He would have tried to get 52,000 pounds (converted 58,700 euros) in taxpayers’ money. A court in the English city of Leeds sentenced him to four years in prison.
This is reported by the British news agency PA on Thursday. Jared O’Mara has, among other things, submitted documents from an organization that is supposedly committed to people with autism. But, as it turned out, this did not exist. The address given by the former MP was that of a McDonald’s branch.
Friend hired for gigs
The taxpayer money would be used for O’Mara’s cocaine use. In addition, he pretended to hire a friend and also charged the costs. The friend offered nothing in return.
A court in the English city of Leeds has now ruled that the former politician will be jailed for four years. O’Mara was elected to the Labor Party in the Sheffield Hallam constituency in 2017, ousting former Deputy Prime Minister and former Leader of the Liberal Democrats Nick Clegg.
Employee harassed, homophobic remarks
However, numerous allegations ranging from homophobic comments online to harassing an employee with inappropriate Whatsapp messages quickly made O’Mara an outsider. He left the Labor Party but kept his MP until the December 2019 election.
