Two weeks after the announcement by parent company Meta, the profiles of former US President Donald Trump on Facebook and Instagram, which were blocked more than two years ago, are now officially unlocked again. The Republican has not posted anything there yet (as of Friday morning).
Trump’s accounts on several major online platforms were blocked after his supporters stormed the seat of the US parliament in Washington in January 2021. At the time, he not only expressed his condolences to the rioters, but also incited the violent crowd with a speech.
Trump had previously used his online channels for months to spread the repeatedly refuted claim that he had been duped into a victory over Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election. At the time, platform operators feared that Trump could lead to more violence if he turns his supporters on. kept turning on.
According to Meta, no longer a threat to public safety
Meta’s independent regulator, which can scrutinize decisions about content and accounts, recently decided that there was no longer a risk to public safety as there was in January 2021. In November, new Twitter owner Elon Musk had already unlocked Trump’s account with the short message service. However, the ex-president has not used it so far and is sticking with the Twitter copy he founded, Truth Social.
Profiles unchanged since early 2021
Trump also hasn’t posted anything on Facebook and Instagram, where he has a total of 57.5 million followers since the reactivation. In his last Facebook post dated January 6, 2021, he appealed to “all in front of the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful. No violence! Remember: WE are the party of law and order – respect the law and our great men and women in blue.”
