Spectacular accident on the southern highway in the Mödling district (Lower Austria): a truck had left the road. The heavy vehicle, loaded with concrete, rolled over the guardrail and ended up on its side. The injured driver was trapped in the driver’s cabin.
It is still unclear why the barrel transporter veered out of its lane in morning traffic. In any case, the concrete-laden truck left the highway at Wiener Neudorf near Shopping City Süd, overturned and ended up behind the guardrail. The driver was injured in the accident and was trapped in the driver’s cabin.
Difficult to use
When the alarmed fire brigade arrived at the scene of the accident, the injured person was already receiving urgent medical care from a Red Cross team. The first step was to free the victim from the wreckage as carefully as possible. “In close cooperation, the windshield was removed so that the injured person could be rescued,” reports Martin Billensteiner, operations manager of the fire brigade.
The accident wreckage was then recovered in collaboration with ASFINAG’s highway maintenance department. Due to running out of resources and the complicated location of the truck, it was decided to request the large fire hydrant from Mödling.
As the heavy emergency vehicle drove up, firefighters had to manually shovel concrete from the back of the crashed truck. The propeller shaft of the overturned heavy vehicle was also removed. The accident vehicle, which weighed several tons, was then lifted over the guardrail onto the highway. A private company then took over the move.
