Debate in Germany – calls for conscription to be returned

Date:

After the outbreak of war in Ukraine last year, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz declared a “turning point”. The goal: to make Germany more defensive. To this end, the defense budget will be substantially increased. And the reintroduction of conscription, which has been suspended since 2011, is currently under intensive discussion. The Bundeswehr reservist association considers the return of conscription to be inevitable, otherwise Germany would be “incapable of defense”.

The Bundeswehr must credibly demonstrate to the outside world that it can act as a deterrent. In addition to a well-trained and equipped troop, this requires an equally well-trained and equipped reserve. “Reservists are only sufficiently recruited from conscription,” said the chairman of the reservist association, Patrick Sensburg, in an interview with various German media on Friday.

Parliamentary Armed Forces Commissioner Eva Högl also stressed to Bayern’s media group: “The return to national and allied defense includes a reliable, operational, well-equipped and trained reserve.” In January, new defense minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) said the suspension of conscription by the black and yellow federal government in 2011 was a mistake.

Reintroduction with FDP not possible
Högl also recently called for a discussion about the introduction of a new type of conscription. The FDP clearly rejects this. “That will not happen with the Free Democrats,” said First Secretary of State Johannes Vogel in the Bundestag on Wednesday.
