It must be incredibly stressful days for the families of the two victims after the stonefall in Steyr-Unterhimmel on Wednesday morning. Because the corpses of Marco Sch. (31) – the junior boss of the special company commissioned from Carinthia – and Franz Josef O. (64) are still under tons of stone. It is still too dangerous for the emergency services to enter the scene of the accident and there is still a risk of further falling boulders.
Next crisis meeting on Monday
“It is still unclear when the recovery measures can start. Before this question can be answered, further research is needed. Further measures will be discussed on the basis of new findings at the next crisis meeting on Monday. In any case, we as an authority and the torrent and avalanche control as a customer are working hard on a solution,” says Mayor Markus Vogl of Steyr, keeping the readers of “Krone” informed.
Entry and residence ban
As long as the danger has not passed, the affected residents will not be allowed to return to their homes for the time being. At the moment no one dares to say when that might happen. Because although the police lifted the official parking ban on Thursday afternoon, nothing has changed for the population. “There is currently an unlimited entry and residence ban at the scene of the accident. To be more precise, in front of the houses at Rosegger Straße 5/2, 4 and 7, the slope above and the Christkindlweg area, a hundred meters to the right and left of the demolition point,” says Vogl.
The residents stayed with relatives, in the municipal youth hostel and in hotels. On Friday, the residents were allowed to return to their homes for a short time under police escort and they were able to pack and take with them much-needed items for the coming days – or perhaps weeks.
