After overcoming the pandemic crisis and setting all records in 2021, the world wine trade has experienced a year of great uncertainty.

The Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment, Arantxa Tapia, along with the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Policy, Bittor Oroz, participated in the acts of Uztaberri Eguna, a traditional day when winemakers open their doors to announce the young wines of the last harvest. Throughout the morning they visited wineries and gastronomic stands and provided information on the evolution of wine exports over the past year.
“Following the trend of world wine trade in a period of great uncertainty and high inflation,” Tapia stated in Lapuebla de Labarca, “Alava’s exports of DOCa Rioja wines decreased in volume by 16.9%but they held up well in value (-2.6%), thanks to an average price that has already reached 6.92 euros per liter, more than one euro per liter higher than that recorded in the same period of 2021.”
In fact, in fourteen of the first fifteen markets, except France, they went up in price considerably.
The foreign wine sales with DOCa Rioja conducted from Álava approached the 21.2 million litres, at an average price 18.6% higher than in 2021, as a result of which the turnover barely decreased, which amounted to 146.7 million euros. In terms of variety, whites declined in volume more than reds and rosés, although they generated slightly more sales as their average price skyrocketed.
After overcoming the crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic and recording historical records in 2021, the world wine trade, which wanted to consolidate this growth in 2022, has experienced a year of great insecurity.
The military invasion of Ukraine in Ukraine, the transport crisis and the supply of materials or the sharp rise in energy and fuel prices have led to a high level of inflation global. The world export of wine is losing volume, but is gaining in turnover due to very high prices.
