Good news from the earthquake disaster area: rescuers from Vorarlberg pulled a girl out of the rubble in the Turkish-Syrian border area on Saturday night – and alive! The young woman was buried for no less than 110 hours.
It was a rare moment of happiness in the midst of unimaginable suffering: more than four and a half days after the devastating earthquake in the border region between Turkey and Syria, the Vorarlberg Red Cross SARUV unit, specially trained for such operations, in cooperation rescued a girl from the rubble with other relief teams in the city of Kahramanmaras.
That the 15-year-old survived is a real miracle, not least given the freezing temperatures in the region.
“There must have been a radiator or some kind of heater in the cavity where she was trapped. That’s how she survived,” suspects SARUV team leader Markus Mayr. The dogs of the team from the Ländle played a major role in the rescue – because they eventually were the ones who tracked down the girl.
Other field of application as an army helper
The helpers from Vorarlberg have been working around the clock in the disaster area since Wednesday, first in the city of Osmanija and since Friday in Kahramanmaras. The SARUV team was able to save three people during the very first mission. Such success stories are becoming increasingly rare in the relentless battle against time. Experience shows that the chances of survival 72 hours after such an accident are almost zero. The joy of the “miracle of Kahramanmaras” is all the greater.
The security situation in Kahramanmaras is acceptable, it said on Saturday at the request of the “Krone”. The army, which had been deployed in another region, had meanwhile had to break off its rescue operations.
