According to Russian mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, he expects years of heavy fighting in Ukraine. Russia’s planned conquest of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions could take one and a half to two years, the Wagner Group chief said in an interview video released by a Russian military blogger on Saturday.
If it is desired to move further west to the Dnipro River, it will take about three years, Prigozhin added.
Bachmut is necessary for undisturbed operation
The head of the Wagner group had recently stated that his troops should take the city of Bakhmut to continue their campaign. “Bakhmut is needed so that our troops can operate undisturbed,” Prigozhin told a Russian military correspondent in one of his rare interviews, published on Friday. However, they encountered bitter resistance from the Ukrainian defenders.
Russia must set clear targets in its nearly year-long offensive, Prigozhin advised. It must consolidate its presence in eastern Ukraine or advance further to conquer other parts of the country.
